Dermatopathology is the science of interpretation of skin biopsy specimens under the microscope. Dermatopathologists combine clinical information with microscopic findings to render a diagnosis for the dermatologist who performed the biopsy. The dermatologist can then use the biopsy diagnosis to determine a treatment plan for the patient.Â
Board-certified dermatopathologists have completed training in either dermatology or pathology, have received subsequent fellowship training in interpreting skin biopsy specimens, and have passed a comprehensive exam testing their knowledge of dermatopathology and their skills in diagnosing biopsy specimens.Â
